BIOGRAPHY

Mount Royal Rocky Mountain Taiko Ensemble is a dedicated group of musicians who love to perform taiko (Japanese drum ensemble) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Officially formed in 2018, members of the Rocky Mountain Taiko Ensemble are comprised of experienced youth and adult performers who study together at the Mount Royal Conservatory under the direction of Paula Midori Nieckar. 

The Rocky Mountain Taiko Ensemble focuses on the culture, musicality, and energizing choreography of kumi-daiko (ensemble of Japanese taiko). Members are building a positive taiko community and friendships, while creatively connecting with each other and with audiences. They have added energizing performances to MRU events:

  • International Education Week

  • pep rallies

  • awards ceremonies

  • supporting the MRU Cougars Volleyball, soccer and Hockey teams. 

 

They have also enthusiastically performed at local events including

  • Otafest

  • Globalfest

  • Centre ice at the Scotiabank Saddledome for the Calgary Hitmen's Multicultural Night

  • Calgary Stampede and the Stampede Parade

  • Omatsuri Japanese Festival

  • Mayor’s Lunch for Arts Champions

  • Heritage Park

  • local Japanese school

  • Calgary Stampeders and Calgary Roughnecks

  • local taiko recitals and feature concerts
